THE BRIDGE
The New Jazz Bakery Newsletter
OUR 20th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION CONTINUES...

Issue No. 3 of The Bridge, the Jazz Bakery's periodic newsletter, finds us in the midst of several exciting developments. We've launched the "silent phase" of the capital campaign for our new building. Our online presence has gone global. And following a stellar line-up of talent during the first half of 2013, our Movable Feast concert series is gearing up for an equally exciting fall. (Clickhere to access more details about the Movable Feast.) Plus, the Jazz Bakery/Angel City Jazz Festival co-production returns in October, presented at some of the finest venues in Los Angeles: John Anson Ford Amphitheatre, Redcat at Disney Hall, Zipper Auditorium at the Colburn School, LACMA and UCLA's Royce Hall.
Angel City Jazz Festival
Angel City Jazz Fest 2013
This is the second year that the Jazz Bakery is a proud co-presenter of the ANGEL CITY JAZZ FESTIVAL (October 4-13).  In just six years, the ACJF has earned a unique reputation among major jazz festivals; you won't find any folk singers or power pop bands filling the grooves. Dave HollandTootie HeathJohn ScofieldRobert Glasper ExperimentDafnis PrietoGreg OsbyAnat CohenYosvany TerryNicole Mitchell and The Claudia Quintet should give you ample reason to stay in town the first two weekends in October - and cool off with the hottest jazz.  In addition, we'll be screening chapters from Icons Among Us: Jazz in the Present Tense, our favorite jazz documentary.  You can keep an eye on ticket and schedule information by clicking here.  (Jazz Bakery fans get an automatic 20% discount for the Oct. 6 event at Ford Amphitheatre when tickets are purchased at the ACJF website; enter coupon code LAJB.)

New Building Update
We've received Frank Gehry's completed design for our new building - and it's a beauty!  With the recent unveiling of his stunning model for private donors, we officially entered the "silent phase" of our capital campaign.  Frank attended this event along with musicians Quincy JonesJohnny MandelJohn ClaytonDwight Trible and Patrick Williams.  The next generation of jazz performers was represented by Ari Berrong-Huber andJulian Gomez, students at the Los Angeles High School of the Arts who have been mentored by the Thelonious Monk Institute.  It was an exciting kick-off for a dream project that's now on the road to actuality.
Dual Spotlight

Bob Barry, the esteemed jazz photographer who documents our Movable Feast concerts, received top honors this summer at the American Jazz Museum in Kansas City. His "Jazzography" exhibit is wrapping up a six-week engagement there, capped by a screening of Dailey Pike's documentary Bob Barry - Jazzography in Black and White. Check out Bob's terrific photos for the Jazz Bakery at our Flickr page, and you'll see why this artist is in demand.

Widely-read jazz reporter Andrew Gilbert (whose recent article on Joshua Redman made the cover of JazzTimes) has earned our eternal gratitude. Andrew penned our new Wikipedia entry, which is harder to write - and more important - than you'd think. Since Wikipedia prevented us from submitting our own article, misinformation about the Bakery's status lingered in search engines for years. Andrew's new entry corrects the official record with a detailed list of performers and a complete discography of live recordings. He has also volunteered to bring my (Ruth's) Wikipedia entry up to date. Thanks, Andy. I'm so excited!

Jazz Bakery Jukebox icon
Hello Out There!
Late last year we launched Jazz Bakery Jukebox, a music-streaming supplement to our website. To our surprise and delight, this little blog is finding a global audience of jazz lovers - 6,000 new listeners just in the last week. We're adding two commercial-free music programs every month. TheArtist's Choice series features 'mix tapes' compiled by our favorite artists and musicians, while Take Ten highlights ten new jazz releases every month. Listeners with internet connections can stream the music via computers, smartphones, some tablets and, later this year, on new car radios. We want you to discover some classic recordings and catch up with the new stuff at our Jukebox.  Don't be afraid to 'like' and comment.
Logo A-Go-Go
Back in February, we auctioned some limited-edition prints of David Stone Martin's iconic album cover art with support from our friends at JazzArtz. The Los Angeles Times ran a feature article on David and JazzArtz last month. That prompted me to dig up David's original logo for the Jazz Bakery. The pen-and-ink drawing was the last piece of art he created, and I couldn't be happier that he's enjoying this well-deserved renaissance. So happy, in fact, I had to write a letter to the Times. Please let us know if you have questions for our next newsletter. We want to hear from you before we cross the next Bridge!
